About Us
The Japanese Society for Dementia Research was established in 1982 and was renamed to its current title in 2005. The society hosts academic conferences and publishes journals with the aim of advancing scientific research in various fields related to dementia, both clinical and basic, and contributing these findings to society.
Greeting from the executive president
Takeshi Iwatsubo
The prevalence of dementia in Japan is significant, with 4.5 million people currently living with the condition. Additionally, there are 5.5 million individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), an early stage of dementia. These figures are projected to rise further in the coming years. The enactment of the Basic Act on Dementia in 2024 to promote a symbiotic society underscores the urgent need to enhance dementia care and foster comprehensive societal efforts to enable individuals with dementia to live with dignity and hope.
The Japanese Society for Dementia Research is a multidisciplinary organization comprising over 6,300 members, including basic medical researchers, clinicians from various specialties involved in dementia care, pharmacists, nurses, rehabilitation professionals, corporate researchers, and government officials.
Recent advancements in understanding the pathophysiology of dementia have paved the way for the development of “disease-modifying drugs” targeting the mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease. The clinical application of anti-amyloid-β antibody therapies commenced in Japan between 2023 and 2024. The society plays a pivotal role in evaluating the effectiveness of these novel treatments and ensuring their appropriate delivery to eligible patients. Additionally, a core mission of the society is to explore optimal care strategies, lifestyle interventions, and societal conditions to support those living with dementia.
Given the growing societal demands related to dementia, the 21st century calls for the evolution of dementia science into a holistic brain science, integrating biomedical research with humanities and social sciences. The society strives to foster collaboration among professionals, individuals with dementia, their families, and the broader community, aiming to promote coexistence and prevent dementia across all stages of life.
We sincerely invite you to actively participate in and support the Japanese Society for Dementia Research. Your engagement and encouragement are invaluable as we collectively work toward a dementia-inclusive society.
